It took only moments for AT&T to react to the Google announcement that they were deploying Google Fiber in the Austin, TX market. Consumers, apparently competition works after all! This is what you can look forward to in the coming markets Google enters.
The incumbent carrier will wait to deploy new technology until forced to do so by competition, in order to continue to profit from high margins on obsolete services.
This is a perfect example of why competition is so important for the US wireless and broadband markets. Without competition, carriers can offer obsolete services at excessive prices. Kansas City and Austin, and others, are at the forefront of making sure that their citizens have access to the latest technology at low prices by opening up the closed markets of fiber and broadband access.
